THE BUSINESS
Elysian Earth is an independently-owned online bookshop specializing in speculative fiction. It is owned and operated by Elysian Earth LLC, a Brooklyn, New York-based microbusiness established in August of 2006.

THE NAME
The short answer: Essentially, the name is a synonym for the word utopia.
The long answer: The word utopia is used to describe a quintessentially perfect place. However, the etymology of the word (from the Greek, oo meaning "not" and topos meaning "place") shows the word to literally mean, "a place that does not exist". This seems the perfect analogy to speculative fiction, since two hallmarks of this genre are its unreal settings - whether it be an alien planet or an alternate version of Earth - and the penchant of its authors for creating, or inverting the idea, of an idealized society.

Elysian Earth maintains a blog that offers reviews of speculative fiction books, details on the management and development of this business, and information on speculative fiction and related pop culture news and events.
